ClimateAdapt4EOSC and FAIR2Adapt Joint Workshop Showcases Climate Data Innovation at EGI2025

On 3 June 2025, FAIR2Adapt-EOSC.eu and Climate-Adapt4EOSC co-hosted a joint workshop in Santander, Spain, as part of the EGI2025 Conference. The event brought together over 20 participants — including researchers, project representatives and interoperability experts — to address the pressing challenges of integrating climate data for adaptation and resilience.

The workshop provided a dynamic platform for sharing perspectives on:

  • Key research and policy gaps in climate change adaptation;

  • Open, EOSC-aligned tools and infrastructures to support data-driven adaptation;

  • Four real-world case studies exploring diverse integration pathways;

  • Interoperability challenges across semantic, technical, legal, and organisational levels.

💬 Many thanks to all our speakers :

  • Jesse DeMaria-Kinney (Adaptation Research Alliance) on the scope and fragmentation of adaptation research;

  • Miruna Stoicescu (EUMETSAT) on the Destination Earth digital twin initiative;

  • Simon Hodson and Matti Heikkurinen (CODATA, CA4EOSC) alongside Esteban Gonzalez (FAIR2Adapt-EOSC.eu) on visions for data integration and interoperable services in the EOSC ecosystem.

🧪 The four featured case studies illustrated how cross-domain tools and open frameworks can support local and systemic responses to climate risks:

  • Marta Gutierrez (EGI Foundation) presented ENVRI-Hub NEXT, a platform interlinking environmental research infrastructures;

  • Thanasis Sfetsos (NCSR Demokritos, CA4EOSC Coordinator) introduced Just-CURS, a citizen-informed urban digital twin;

  • Malte von Szombathely (FAIR2Adapt-EOSC.eu) showcased a climate risk assessment for the City of Hamburg;

  • Nicola Fiore (EGI Foundation, EOSC Beyond) shared insights on technical interoperability and environmental data nodes.

⚙️ Thematic discussions followed, with a focus on:

  • Semantic interoperability, including tools such as CDIF, FDOs and RO-Crate;

  • Legal and organisational models for data governance in EOSC and federated data spaces.

📢 The outcomes of the workshop will inform the upcoming deliverables of both projects and contribute to wider science-policy dialogues, notably:

  • The European Climate Change Adaptation Conference (ECCA 2025);

  • The EOSC Opportunity Area 2 Expert Group;

  • Ongoing efforts to shape interoperability roadmaps across data ecosystems.

We warmly thank all participants and speakers for their contributions, and invite you to discover more through the links below:
